Top 10 Things to do for $20 or less in Dubai
Dubai is known as a city of gold, expensive cars, yachts, rich people, world records, and even a 7 star hotel. However, with all of the wealth, there are also middle class (and broke) everyday people such as me, a student, who can still have plenty of fun in Dubai and still find things to do in dubai for a reasonable and fair price. If there is one thing I have learned about this incredible city, it is that you can find restaurants to spend $500 at for a meal, or restaurants to spend $3 at for a meal, and everything in between. You just have to get away from the touristy parts of town and go more local. In this blog post, I will tell you 10 things (there is plenty more than 10, but these are my favorite and the places I find the best) to do around Dubai for $20 or less. This list is in no particular order and please note that currency prices do fluctuate frequently so it’s best to exchange these prices yourself before booking or check out the websites directly, which I have linked below.
1. Miracle Gardens: 55 dirhams or $15 USD
Miracle gardens is known as the biggest garden in the world and is a beautiful place to walk around,,especially since Dubai is in the middle of a sandpit. While you walk around, you’ll notice how fresh the air feels and the amazing scent of different flowers that fills the air. It’s a very peaceful and relaxing place to stroll around, but be careful on the weekends, it can get pretty crowded!.
This is a great place to take some nice pictures (go early in the morning right when it opens if you want the best chance of no people in your photos), such as with the flower castle or under the heart-shaped flower archways
This is one of the many seasonal attractions in Dubai, so once the summer roles around and it becomes too hot, it closes for the season. It’s opening seasons are from the beginning of November till the end of April, so make sure you plan your trip accordingly during these months so you don’t miss the world’s biggest gardens!
2. Brass Monkey Bowling:60 dirhams or $16.34
Brass monkey is a fun adult type arcade that just recently opened within the last few months. It has have two restaurants inside, an American restaurant and an Asian restaurant , as well as arcade games (the worlds largest pac man) and neon glow-in-the-dark bowling. The food at the restaurants are averaged price for the restaurant’s location within Dubai, so expect to pay between 55-75 dirhams or $15-$25 for a meal, or even more than that depending on what you choose to order. The games are prices between 5-15 dirhams per game or approximately $2-5 USD. Some nights also have live music which usually consists of 70s,80s,90s rock music, which is definitely a good way to jam out while you bowl.
One game of bowling is 60 dirhams (17 dollars) and is first-come first-serve so no reservations are needed! The price includes the bowling shoes and disposable socks, so don’t worry about having to bring your own. Its a fun place to bowl at with good old time rock and roll music, glow in the dark features, and fun vibes!
3.Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding at Kite Beach:60 dirhams or $16.34 USD
There are tons of beaches in Dubai, but I would recommend Kite Beach as the place to go for things such as kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Kite beach is not as touristy as places such as JBR and La Mer, so the prices aren’t as jacked up for tourists as the touristy beaches are, or like they are at beach resorts and beach clubs. The only negative aspect of Kite Beach, is that the metro doesn’t go there, so unfortunately you may have to either take a really long bus that will take a while, or take a taxi (honestly taxis in Dubai are relatively inexpensive, compared to other big cities such as New York City or London, so don’t let this factor deter you away.
This is most likely why Kite Beach isn’t as touristy (in a good way), since there isn’t easily accessible public transport to it. I recommend doing this activity for sunset, as you will have beautiful views over the sea. Kite beach also has tons of restaurants, food trucks, and other activities to indulge in after or before your kayaking or SUP session. Also, a good thing to note, don’t worry about having to show up in your bathing suit, as there are free changing rooms and bathrooms in the beach area as well as showers to wash off all the sand and salt.
4.Ice Lounge:70 dirhams or $19 USD
Dubai’s only ice lounge, Chill Out, is a unique place to visit as it is one of the only few places that you can feel cold weather in. The entrance price is only 70 dirhams ($19), which includes one drink (such as hot chocolate, tea, or soda) and a desert/snack (such as chocolate mousse, tiramisu, chicken skewers). It is a fun place to take pictures all bundled up in your snow boots, snow hat, and thick jacket (which they provide for you). Don’t forget to wear pants if you don’t want to freeze and feel uncomfortable! I thought those were provided also, so I showed up wearing shorts, but turns out I was wrong.
The temperature inside the lounge is around -6 degrees celsius, or 21 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you are a cold natured person then you can probably last longer inside. I would definitely recommend to visit this lounge on a hot summer day so you can feel refreshed in the crisp cold air (summer weather in Dubai can get up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees celcius). It’s not an alcoholic ice lounge like I’ve seen in other cities, so don’t be disappointed when there is no alcohol available to buy, but its still a fun and unique experience, especially when you are visiting or living in the middle of a desert.
5.Flying Cup in JBR: 65 dirhams or $17.70 USD
This is a fun and unique experience for those who love heights! It is a flying cup that goes up 40 meters in height (about 131 feet) and spins around while you go up (but not fast to the point where you get nauseous)
I wouldn’t necessarily compare this to a ride at an amusement park, as it’s very slow moving and not really about the thrill, rather than the view and the experience. It is located in JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence)
which is a popular beach area and board walk in Dubai. There are great views of the Burj Al Arab (Dubai’s 7 star hotel), the beach from above, and the skyscrapers and all the restaurants that are 40 meters below you. If you buy this experience on Groupon, its only $15 including popcorn and a drink! You can choose between soft drinks, tea, coffee, water, or an icee from the drink selection to take with you while you go up. It’s a fun experience to try for only $15, so I would definitely says its a great value for the money. If you want to spend a little more money, you can even have a whole meal up in the sky, which breaks the $20 price limit and is 120 dirhams ($33USD) for dinner.
6. Dubai Desert Safari:45-75 dirhams or $12-$20 USD
One of the ultimate and most famous things to do in the desert of Dubai- a classic desert safari! You can’t come to the United Arab Emirates without at least trying a desert safari once in your life. Sometimes being surrounded by the hundreds of skyscrapers and manmade phenomenons of Dubai, you forget that you are actually right in the middle of a desert. For those of you who don’t realize, Dubai is quite literally located in the middle of a sand pit, AKA the Arabian Desert. Because there are SO MANY companies and competitors for the desert safari tours since it is probably one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city, you can find and purchase a basic desert safari, for the very cheap price of only about $12-$20 USD per person! These basic desert safaris include activities such as: a short camel ride, a BBQ dinner under the desert stars, multiple cultural shows and performances( such as belly dancers, fire shows, tanoura dancers),
shisha smoking, henna tattoos, dune bashing in the desert sand(warning: you might get nauseous from this one), and amazing photo opportunities of the sunset or sunrise in the desert. Of course, there is plenty of more activities you can do in the desert such as ATV rides, dune buggy rides, hour long camel treks, falcon shows, sand boarding, and even sleeping there overnight in the desert camp, but these all come at an additional charge that would make your desert safari experience more than $20 (but it’s totally worth it). I would recommend a desert safari to any tourists coming to Dubai, and even residents too! It’s a great once-in-a-lifetime experience, whether it be with your family or friends! Fun Fact: the desert sand is AMAZINGLY SOFT and the softest sand I’ve ever felt. Definitely take your shoes off and walk around!
7. Arabian Tea House: 20-75 dirhams or $5.50-$20 USD
This is probably one of the most authentic restaurants you can go to in Dubai! Because there are SO many expats and foreigners living in Dubai (about 80% of the city is made up of expats), you can pretty much always find any type of cuisine that you can dream of. However, with all of the foreign food that is offered, many tourists and residents forget to sought out and experience an actual Emirati restaurant. The Arabian Tea House restaurant is very traditional looking with Arabic type architecture and decorations, as well as beautiful flowers around it.

9.Visit Ce La Vie: 66-74 dirhams or $18-$20 USD
If you want great instagramable pictures with the Burj Khalifa, than Ce La Vie is your place! This is a nice and somewhat fancy (make sure to dress up a little, as the official dress code is smart casual) rooftop bar and restaurant that has an amazing view of the Burj Khalifa with a picturesque swing that you can sit on to take beautiful pictures. I recommend going around sunset time or late afternoon, so you can take pictures and see the view both at night as well as during the day. The great thing about this bar/restaurant, is that there is no cover charge or minimum spend (like many places in Dubai), so you can go in and literally order the cheapest thing on the menu and enjoy the view. I ended up ordering a passionfruit cocktail (which was DELICIOUS) for $19, which is a little pricy for your average cocktail, but remember that you are in a relatively expensive city at a nice rooftop bar with amazing views, so it is worth the money! Of course if you want to order food also, they offer some appetizers that are below $20 and there are several beers and cocktail options for below $20 too, so you can easily afford a nice afternoon or evening at this place if you are on a budget and commit to only ordering one drink…(:
They also have a pool bar that you can take advantage of, but unfortunately this is more than $20 so I will not include it in the list, but I just wanted to mention it so that people know it exists
10.The Dubai Frame: 50 dirhams or $13.61 USD
The Dubai Frame is a great tourist attraction that you can easily do on a budget. It is the largest picture frame in the world, and has an observation deck inside where you can walk over glass flooring. On one side of the frame, you can see downtown Dubai including the Burj Khalifa which is known as “new Dubai”, and if you look through the other side of the frame, you can see the “old Dubai”. This is a great substitution, or addition, for those budget travelers out there who don’t want to pay a more expensive ticket to go up to the Burj Khalifa observation deck. Plus, if you have always wanted to visit the largest picture frame in the world, then you can check that off your bucket list!
Top 10 things to do for $20 or less in Dubai
This concludes my list of 10 things to do in Dubai for $20 or less. So as you can see, there are still plenty of great experiences to have for those traveling on a budget or for those who don’t want to be sucked into Dubai’s rich and luxury lifestyle. Also one last note, make sure to check Groupon for offers on some of these activities, as they are usually on sale at an even reduced price than mentioned in this blog
